Curve

Curve is a new quintet with strong links to the dynamic Loop Collective. Led by trumpeter Rory, it features several of the capital's most highly-rated young players. Rory has performed widely, with Mike Garrick, NYJO and Bill Watrous among others, at jazz festivals from Bath to Vienna; he composes much of the music, which is influenced by Dave Douglas, Dave Holland and Ellery Eskelin; he studied with the great Steve Waterman.

James has performed with Graham Collier and Polar Bear, and is a winner of the Perrier Jazz Award; Robin, back here next week with Blink, has performed with Mike Garrick and the London Jazz Orchestra since moving over from France. He's also in the F-ire Collective. Dave also leads a quartet, and has played at jazz festivals in Kathmandu and Cyprus; he's performed with Jamie Cullum and Gwilym Simcock. Bahamian-born drummer Ben has played with noted Tubers Mark Lockheart, Eddie Parker and Steve Buckley, and is also a member of Fraud.

Blink

Blink

Leading lights of the Loop family, Blink began as a collaboration between Alcyona and French reedman Robin, becoming a trio with the addition of percussionist Paul; they play mostly original material by Alcyona and Robin, combining influences from various sources of swing, classical music, rock, free improvisation and world music. They recently recorded their debut album in Abbey Road, featuring 9 original tracks and a piece by Harrison Birtwhistle.

Alcyona studied at the Birmingham Conservatoire and Royal Academy of Music with Liam Noble and Pete Saberton; she recorded her debut album Around the Sun for quintet after receiving the Leverhulme Fellowship from the Academy. Paul is a relative veteran of many varied, extraordinary collaborations, from early music pioneers Joglaresa and the Proms with John Harle, to Andy Sheppard and Stan Sulzmann; he performed with Kenny Wheeler, Fred Hersch and Norma Winstone in the group Four in Perspective. He recently played BJC with Alan Barnes.
