Tom Mix Trio £8/£6 (concs.)
Mark Hanslip Tenor sax Olie Brice Double bass Tony Marsh Drums
This relatively new band promises great things, led by a leading talent from the Loop Collective. Mark has been to us in some of the most adventurous new bands, most recently the Alcyona Mick Quintet and the quartet Outhouse, which he co-leads, and earlier the Matt Wates Sextet. The Tom Mix Trio was formed to explore the freer areas of jazz, avowedly bridging the territory from John Coltrane, Lee Konitz and Sonny Rollins to the classical realms of Bartok, Webern and Xenakis.
A sense of adventure will no doubt be present in the drumming of Tony Marsh, an iconic figure who appears on several classic recordings by the Mike Westbrook Orchestra, Harry Beckett and Chris Biscoe. Paul Rogers, Howard Riley and Evan Parker have also featured prominently in Tony's career.
Completing the band is a new name to BJC, no doubt destined for great things. Since a recent move to London, Olie has begun gigging regularly in a trio with Ingrid Laubrock, Loz Speyer's Inner Space with Chris Biscoe, and the Five Spot Quintet with Kevin Figes. Now embarking on a short UK tour, the trio plan to record their first CD soon.

Full Circle £8/£6 (concs.)
Joss Peach Piano Terry Pack Double bass Jim Whyte Drums
One of our most creative and original musicians brings us his flagship trio, a strong collaboration of kindred spirits. Brighton resident Joss is becoming well-known around the UK for his wide range of composing and performing skills; Claire Martin (Radio 3's Jazz Line-Up) commented: "A quirky, fresh and original take on the trio format. Well-crafted originals and skillfully adapted classics left me wanting much more."
An outstanding straight-ahead player who has gigged with Pete Wareham, Seb Rochford, Spike Wells, Bobby Wellins, Andy Panayi and Dave Whitford, Joss also composes music for film, teaches African drumming and may also add his mbira skills to this evening's music. Terry adds masses of experience across rock and jazz, having gigged with BB King, Dr. John, Van Morrison, John Etheridge, Liane Carroll, Gilad Atzmon and Don Weller. As a bandleader and composer he released the album What Happens Now on Symbol Records.
Jim is another name to watch; originally based around the Scottish jazz scene, he has worked with Kenny Wheeler, John Taylor, Julian Siegel, Anita Wardell and Nikki Iles. Like Joss and Terry, he leads his own group Sonic Butterfly, currently featuring saxophonist John Burgess. Jim's range is broad, with classical, gamelan and African influences present. Full Circle have a brand new CD Underbelly available.
