Matt Wates Sextet £14/£12
Matt Wates Alto saxophone Steve Main Tenor sax Martin Shaw Trumpet
Leon Greening Piano Malcolm Creese Bass Matt Home Drums
Currently in the middle of an extensive UK tour, this sextet has been gigging and recording solidly since the mid 1990s, and is as tight an ensemble as that would suggest. Berklee alumnus Matt puts together the finest players to recreate the feel of the classic bands of Art Blakey, Horace Silver and other Blue Note staples, and has produced a mammoth nine CDs with this group alone. All bear the above influences, though he declares that 80% of the material will be original compositions – all guaranteed to swing.
His band have all the right qualities, being seasoned players in straight ahead and beyond. Steve's gigs for BJC go right back to the Lift with Burnt Orange; also a busy composer, he's worked with Burt Bacharach, the Stan Sulzmann Big Band and as lead soloist with NYJO.
Martin's sensational soloing has been heard with everyone from Stan Tracey to Jamiroquai. Leon also gigs with Christian Brewer and Damon Brown, his deft playing recalling great pianists such as Wynton Kelly and Bobby Timmons.
Malcolm is an internationally acclaimed musician, famed from many appearances with Cleo Laine, John Dankworth, George Shearing, Lee Konitz and many others. He also runs a successful jazz label, ABCDs, and is one-third of Acoustic Triangle with Tim Garland and Gwilym Simcock.
Matt is another skilled performer, especially in this classic territory, as he plays with the Fishwick-Roberts Quintet; he has also performed with the Ronnie Scott's Club house band. He and Leon are in flautist Gareth Lockrane's septet.
