Iain Ballamy

Iain remains one of the most enduring personalities in jazz, a hugely original composer and improviser who continues to develop his craft in exciting directions. His career has included many highlights, with more surely to come; during an unquestionable hothouse period for UK jazz, Iain was leading his first quartet at Ronnie Scott's at the age of twenty, performing with Loose Tubes and beginning long associations with Bill (Earthworks) Bruford, Billy (Voice of God Collective) Jenkins and Ian (The Voice) Shaw. He has since performed with Gil Evans, Carla Bley, Hermeto Pascoal, Claire Martin, Mike Gibbs and many others. He has recently recorded for ECM, and is due to premiere Gary Carpenter's Saxophone Concerto.

Recent recordings show him linking up with leading Scandinavian musicians for his bands such as Food, one of several projects suggesting a healthy obsession with organic produce. His regular cohorts tonight are all seasoned virtuosi; Gareth is regularly cited as one of our greatest soloists, feted worldwide. Also a gifted singer and guitarist, he has been MD for Claire Martin's band over several years, and has visited us with his own Power Trio.

Steve is also a world class player who has played with everyone of note in British jazz, plus US stars Kirk Lightsey, Joe Lovano and Phil Woods; Martin brings us back to Iain's beginnings with Loose Tubes, also being an major part of the band. Martin's career has seen a near thirty year association with ECM Records, projects with several orchestras and innovative work in electronic music, including his band Spin Marvel. He recently performed in a Radio 3 concert as part of the John Taylor Quartet, celebrating the pianist's 70th birthday.

This is a particularly rare opportunity to hear, paraphrasing Wire magazine of around 1988, the 'youngest legend' in jazz. Jason has really been around that long, bursting onto the jazz scene with prodigious chops in jazz, classical, pop and various other fusions. His talent is such that, at a tender age, he was performing as soloist in Gershwin's Rhapsody In Blue and having his debut album produced by Wayne Shorter.

A busy time gigging with his own bands and guesting with many jazz and soul legends saw him invited into the company of Sting, touring worldwide for several years. This gig led directly to the band of Sting's mate, the even more legendary Jeff Beck, and further global touring.

Jason is now back with many of his own projects, one being particularly laudable; his Jazz Rainbow programme is doing much to aid musical development in schools. He has also been appearing in the London Jazz Festival.

His trio is completed by two remarkable musicians, Troy being the most familiar from visits to Brighton with Jean Toussaint. His drumming skills are world class, yet he is astonishingly gifted as a composer and arranger, too. His debut recording 40 Days is a stunning mix of jazz with other forms, and features guests such as Soweto Kinch, Jason and the strings of the Prague Philharmonic Orchestra, the latter sadly not being able to be with us tonight, though the album is still widely available.
