Sarah Gillespie

Sarah Gillespie Band

Sarah returns to BJC at the Komedia with her career going from strength to strength; two years since first appearing here, this uncompromising performer has cemented her reputation not just as a major new talent in music, but also as a writer, polemicist and film-maker. Her range stems from an upbringing spread between the UK and America, degrees covering film, literature, politics and philosophy, and a spell busking around the US.

Time on the road has, not surprisingly, added a 'beat' edge to her mix of folk, jazz, blues and poetry, and comparisons to Joni Mitchell and Bob Dylan. Alongside four and five-star reviews in the press, Sarah has prompted rare praise from the unique Robert Wyatt. Her first bands have featured the producer of her CD releases, Gilad Atzmon; she is currently touring the UK, with her third album launched in July at London's Pizza Express.

Her regular quartet now features the Mercury-nominated marvel that is Kit Downes, who will bring his own star-studded quintet to BJC in exactly one month. Returning bassist Ben adds his cello to the mix; he has a CD available from his own trio, The Missing Piece. He and Enzo also appear on Sarah's CDs; Enzo's recent appearance for BJC with Gareth Williams and Dave Green was another triumph, and confirmation of this leading Italian musician's welcome place in British jazz.

Cloudmakers Trio

In another treat for fans of the vibraphone, Jim brings one of his acclaimed bands to BJC. He has quickly become recognised as a world-class player not just on the vibes, but also as a drummer, as befits one who began playing at the age of four. He is a leading member of London's Loop Collective, leading the band Gemini as well as this trio, and occasionally playing with Phronesis on drums.

His other sessions have included high profile gigs with Phil Woods, Iain Ballamy, Julian Argüelles and Franco Ambrosetti; he recently guested with Wynton Marsalis and the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra, while the Cloudmakers Trio have toured with US trumpeter Ralph Alessi.

Mike is one of London's most in-demand players, a US bass virtuoso who has been based here since 2005, making a massive contribution to the jazz scene here and around Europe. He's become a major promoter, running regular London sessions with guest soloists. He's just finished a UK tour with US saxophonist Walter Smith III, and has formed a record company, Whirlwind; releases out or due soon include a live CD from recent Pizza Express gigs with Lee Konitz, the new twelve-piece ensemble led by Mike Gibbs, and a recording from the above mentioned Cloudmakers tour with Ralph Alessi.

Dave is, like Jim, a Loop founder; he's a co-leader of the band Outhouse, and has with them worked extensively in West Africa, establishing education projects for which he's been awarded several bursaries. He's a member of Jim's Gemini quartet, co-leads the band Splice, and works with Ingrid Jensen, Mark Lockheart and Eddie Henderson.
