Joe Robinson Quartet While I'm Waiting

This is a welcome opportunity to hear one of our most respected local saxophonists with his own top-notch band. Joe's rich and inventive playing evokes many classic players from the Blue Note era; the All About Jazz website likened him to Stan Getz and Dexter Gordon, when reviewing his excellent CD, While I'm Waiting.

Featured therein are tonight's musicians, all bandleaders at the top of their game; Spike recently brought us his own trio, featuring Chris Laurence and Barry Green. John is deservedly one of the most popular pianists in the UK, unsurprisingly a winner in the British Jazz Awards, and often found in the bands of Dick Pearce, Norma Winstone and Don Weller. Simon is also a mainstay of the UK scene; he's recorded many times, with Stacey Kent and Martin Speake amongst others. He was here in January with Mark Bassey. They can all be enoyed on the aforementioned CD, available from Beezwax Records; it features tunes by Kenny Barron and Wayne Shorter, plus several compositions by Joe himself.

JASBO £8/£6

Penrose Feast Tenor and baritone sax Mark Bassey Trombone
David Beebee Piano George Trebar Bass Ralph Erle Drums

The Jasbo Collective tonight brings an enticing group of diverse talents, assembled by Jasbo leader Ralph. Penrose and the band delighted us last summer with several arrangements and compositions; he has travelled widely, with German improvising troupe Heelium amongst others. He has recently recorded the CD Free Jazz For Lovers with percussionist Oli Sonntag and bassist Giorgi Kiknadze, collectively known as POG.

Mark's exceptional trombone talent has placed him alongside the greatest players, including Julian Arguelles, Tim Whitehead, Alan Barnes and Chris Biscoe, and in the big bands Loose Tubes, Brotherhood of Breath and Jazz Warriors; his own band recently produced the CD Telling Stories. David is a musician of very broad tastes and talents; his own groups include Gaya, for his own compositions, and Brasil Universo, which covers the music of latin legend Hermeto Pascoal - both bands have CDs available. He's also performed with Palestinian Reem Kelani.

George performs in many different contexts, from gypsy jazz with Andreas Oberg and Ensemble Zaiti to free jazz with Spring Heel Jack, alongside Orphy Robinson and John Edwards (qv next week); he's also gigged with Ian Carr and Gary Potter. Aside from his Jasbo activities, Ralph has played with Damon Brown, Johnny Lippiett, Ian Price, Gary Kavanagh and Nigel Thomas.

Joss Peach

Full Circle's Joss Peach
by Tom de Grunwald

Now Brighton-based, Joss has spent a good deal of his musical life touring abroad, including a long stay in Spain, where he played with Perico Sambeat and gained the Secadero prize for jazz piano. He's since worked with a variety of UK players including Spike Wells, Bobby Wellins, Seb Rochford, Andy Williams and Pete Wareham. He performs in the crossover classical duo Best Of Both with Glen Capra, and with the quintet Amberjac, which has a CD in the pipeline. He has formed Full Circle with two of the finest improvisers in the UK, who also perform together as a duo.

Mark has worked across the free scene (including performances with iconic figures Charles Gayle and William Parker), with Tim Berne, and in the experimental work of Jah Wobble and Bill Laswell.

John is a regular player with Evan Parker, in many groupings, and with Tony Bevan, Veryan Weston and others; he's performed at festivals around the world. He is a co-founder of The Pointy Birds, who won awards for their music for the Cholmondeleys and Featherstonehaughs dance troupes.
